Prevention Is the Foundation of a Healthy Smile

At Stephen A. Rodgers, DMD Family Dentistry, we believe that the best dental treatment is the kind you never need. Our preventive care program is designed to keep your teeth and gums healthy for a lifetime — catching small problems before they become big ones, and empowering you with the knowledge and tools to care for your smile at home.

Regular professional care, combined with a consistent home routine, is the most effective and affordable way to maintain your oral health. We recommend visiting our office every six months for a cleaning and exam — though some patients may benefit from more frequent visits depending on their individual needs.

Why Preventive Care Matters

Studies show that every dollar spent on preventive dental care saves between $8 and $50 in restorative and emergency treatment costs. Beyond the financial savings, preventive care protects your natural teeth — which are always preferable to any artificial replacement — and has been linked to better overall health outcomes, including reduced risk of heart disease and diabetes complications.

Our Preventive Services

Comprehensive Dental Exams

At every visit, Dr. Rodgers performs a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, jaw, and oral tissues. We check for cavities, gum disease, bite issues, and early signs of oral cancer — catching problems when they are smallest and easiest to treat.

Professional Teeth Cleanings

Even with excellent home care, plaque and tartar build up in areas that brushing and flossing cannot reach. Our hygienists perform gentle, thorough cleanings to remove buildup, polish your teeth, and leave your mouth feeling fresh.

Digital X-Rays

We use low-radiation digital X-rays to detect cavities between teeth, bone loss, infections, and other issues invisible to the naked eye. Digital X-rays produce up to 90% less radiation than traditional film and are available for immediate review.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Dr. Rodgers performs an oral cancer screening at every routine exam. Early detection dramatically improves treatment outcomes, and this quick, painless check can be lifesaving.

Fluoride Treatments

Topical fluoride applications strengthen tooth enamel and help prevent decay in patients of all ages. We recommend fluoride treatments for children and adults who are at elevated risk for cavities.

Dental Sealants

Sealants are thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth, where decay most commonly begins. They are especially effective for children and teens but can benefit adults as well.

Gum Disease Screening & Treatment

We measure gum pocket depths at every visit to detect early signs of periodontal disease. When caught early, gum disease is highly treatable — and preventing it protects both your smile and your overall health.

Custom Mouthguards

We fabricate custom-fitted night guards for patients who grind or clench their teeth (bruxism) and athletic mouthguards for patients who play contact sports — far more protective and comfortable than store-bought options.

Your Daily Home Care Routine

  • Brush for two full minutes, twice a day, using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss at least once daily to remove plaque and food from between teeth and below the gumline.
  • Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.
  • Limit sugary and acidic foods and beverages, which erode enamel and feed cavity-causing bacteria.
  • Drink plenty of water — especially fluoridated tap water — to rinse away bacteria and strengthen enamel.
  • Avoid tobacco products, which dramatically increase the risk of gum disease and oral cancer.
  • Visit our office every six months for a professional cleaning and exam.

How Often Should I Visit?

Most patients benefit from a cleaning and exam every six months. Patients with a history of gum disease, frequent cavities, or other risk factors may need to come in every three to four months. Dr. Rodgers will recommend the schedule that is right for you.
